Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to some of the most common questions about decluttering, home organising, moving house and working with a professional organiser.
What does a professional organiser do?
A professional organiser helps you declutter and organise your home in a way that works for you and your lifestyle. I can support you with deciding what you want to keep, creating practical storage and organising systems, and putting routines in place that make your home easier to manage going forward. Every project is different, so the support is tailored around what you would like to achieve.
Do I need to tidy my home before you arrive?
Not at all. There’s no need to tidy or organise anything before our session – that’s what I’m here to help with. I understand that asking for support can sometimes feel daunting, particularly if you’ve been struggling with clutter for some time. My approach is supportive and non-judgemental, and we’ll work through things together at a pace you’re comfortable with.
Will I be pressured into throwing things away?
No. The aim isn’t to simply get rid of as much as possible. I’ll help you work through your belongings and make decisions about what is right for you to keep, donate, recycle or let go of. Ultimately, your possessions are yours and the final decision will always be yours.
What happens during my first decluttering or organising session?
We’ll start by discussing what you’d like to achieve and identifying the areas that are causing you the most difficulty. From there, we’ll work through the space together, making decisions about your belongings and beginning to create a more practical and manageable way of organising them. The exact approach will depend on your home, circumstances and goals.
What areas do you cover?
I’m based in Hemel Hempstead and work with clients across the surrounding areas, including Berkhamsted, St Albans, Harpenden, Kings Langley, Chesham and other locations across Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. I generally work within approximately a 10-15 mile radius of Hemel Hempstead. If you’re unsure whether I cover your area, please get in touch and I’ll be happy to confirm.
Can you help me with moving house, packing or unpacking?
Yes. I can provide practical support before, during and after a house move. This can include decluttering before you move, helping with packing, deciding what should come with you and unpacking and organising belongings in your new home. The aim is to make the moving process feel more manageable and help you settle into your new space sooner.
Can you help with downsizing to a smaller home?
Yes. Downsizing can involve making a lot of decisions about belongings collected over many years, and it can sometimes feel overwhelming. I can work alongside you to decide what you’d like to take with you, organise possessions and prepare for your move while making sure the process is handled sensitively and at a manageable pace.
Do you provide support following a bereavement?
Yes. Sorting through possessions following a bereavement can be particularly difficult and there is no expectation for the process to be rushed. I can provide practical, sensitive support to help you work through belongings and organise the home at a pace that feels appropriate for you.
How long does it take to declutter and organise a home?
This will depend on the size of the space, the amount you’d like to work through and what you want to achieve. Some smaller areas may only require a focused session, while larger projects may benefit from several sessions over time. We can discuss your priorities during the initial consultation and decide on an approach that feels realistic for you.
How do I get started with a professional organiser?
The first step is to book a free consultation. This gives us an opportunity to talk about what’s currently challenging you, what you’d like to achieve and the type of support that may work best. There’s no obligation to commit to a session, and it’s an opportunity to ask questions and see whether working together feels right for you.
